Sanda Ojiambo, Assistant Secretary-General of the United Nations and Director-General of the United Nations Global Compact Organization, said in his opening speech at the sidelines meeting that the world currently produces an average of more than 300 million tons of plastic per year, 200 times as much as in 1950. More than half of the plastic products will eventually become garbage. Now at least 14 million tons of plastic will flow into the sea every year, accounting for 80% of the total amount of marine garbage. The ocean is not an inexhaustible resource. Last year, the United Nations Environment Conference adopted a resolution calling for the end of plastic pollution by 2024. At the same time, the conference formulated a legally binding treaty at the international level. The business community must take the responsibility of plastic waste management and devote itself to the development of circular economy and the protection of the world's oceans.
