Chongqing is actively taking action to control plastic waste! After the World Bank (WB) loan for China's plastic waste reduction project officially took effect this year, the total loan funds for the project were 430 million US dollars, of which Chongqing received a loan of 270 million US dollars, becoming one of the first cities to receive funding and intellectual support from the World Bank to carry out comprehensive plastic waste management projects. Recently, a World Bank inspection team visited Chongqing to carry out an inspection of the Chongqing plastic waste comprehensive treatment project.
Global production of 400 million tons of plastic annually, of which approximately 40% is used in the packaging industry, i.e. disposable products. China is the world's largest plastic producer and a major destination for developed countries to export plastic waste. It faces severe challenges in managing its own plastic waste.
Chongqing has the highest rural land area among all municipalities directly under the central government in China, integrating the characteristics of large cities, rural areas, mountainous areas, and large storage areas. It faces enormous challenges in agricultural non-point source pollution control and rural solid waste management. Plastic waste in rural areas of Chongqing mainly comes from rural agricultural films, which are widely used. According to statistics, the annual usage of rural agricultural films in Chongqing is about 45000 tons.
The World Bank's loan is undertaken by Chongqing Environmental Sanitation Group, Qijiang District, and Wulong District for project implementation and loan fund management. During their visit to Chongqing, the World Bank inspection team visited the Qijiang District and the Municipal Environmental Sanitation Group project site to conduct on-site research, understand the overall progress of the project, and provide technical guidance; And hold special meetings to study the work arrangements and procurement plans for the 2024 fiscal year of the Municipal Environmental Sanitation Group, Qijiang District, and Wulong District, laying a solid foundation for the smooth implementation of the project.
The World Bank inspection team's visit to Chongqing aims to accelerate the implementation of project construction and improve the efficiency of loan fund utilization.
