How can we recycle more flexible packaging? Why not start by providing more packaging recycling points?
The Canadian Plastics Pact has released a report outlining the long and winding road to achieving the goal of improving the recycling rate of flexible packaging. Currently, only 3% -4% of flexible packaging is recycled.
Approximately 70% of Canadians can place flexible packaging on the roadside for recycling, but most systems only accept single material polyethylene bags. Many packaging bags contain multiple materials.
But British Columbia has established a network of 200 drop points, accepting packaging from multiple materials and able to recycle about 25% of flexible packaging products.
