On May 24, 2022, the General Administration of market supervision and administration and the National Standards Commission approved the issuance of the National Standard No. 1 amendment to the food and cosmetics (gb23350-2021) to restrict excessive packaging of commodities, which puts forward stricter requirements on the excessive packaging of moon cakes and zongzi.

The new standard amendment stipulates that the number of packaging layers of moon cakes and zongzi should not exceed three; For zongzi with a sales price of more than 100 yuan, the proportion of packaging cost in the sales price shall be reduced from 20% to 15%, and precious metals and mahogany materials shall not be used; Zongzi should not be mixed with other products exceeding its price. The revised standard implementation date is August 15, 2022. The release of this amendment further standardizes the packaging of moon cakes and zongzi, curbs the excessive packaging of moon cakes and zongzi, advocates a simple and moderate, green and low-carbon lifestyle, and opposes extravagance, waste and unreasonable consumption.

In the next step, the Bureau will vigorously promote the implementation of the new standards, carry out in-depth supervision and inspection on excessive packaging of food, urge food and cosmetics manufacturers to implement the corporate responsibility, strictly abide by the provisions of the law on the prevention and control of environmental pollution by solid wastes and the mandatory national standards of food and cosmetics required to limit excessive packaging of commodities, and promote the high-quality development of enterprises. At the same time, we advocate that consumers consciously practice the concept of green consumption and do not buy or use excessively packaged goods.
