2400 tons of plastic waste per day exacerbates environmental disasters in Bangladesh

According to the Daily Star on the 5th, Bangladesh is one of the most vulnerable countries to climate change, and plastics are silently exacerbating the country's environmental disasters.

The report states that among all the garbage, plastic is the most dangerous for this densely populated developing country, and plastic shopping bags or food packaging that people use for minutes to hours will continue to exist in the country's environment for hundreds of years.

The report points out that developed countries are adopting a three-pronged approach to address the overwhelming plastic threat of reduction, reuse, and recycling. However, although Bangladesh has a law to reduce the use of plastics, its implementation has stumbled.

A 2021 study by the World Bank showed that only 31% of disposable plastic products in the country are recycled. In addition, the per capita plastic usage in Bangladesh has doubled from 3 kilograms in 2005 to 9 kilograms in 2021. In Dhaka, this number is 24 kilograms, almost three times that of other urban areas in the country.

In the roadmap for sustainable plastic management in Bangladesh, the World Bank recommends that Bangladesh recycle 50% of all plastic used by 2025 and 80% by 2030.

Ijaz Hossain, former dean of the School of Engineering at the University of Engineering and Technology of Bangladesh, stated that Bangladesh generates approximately 24000 tons of garbage every day, of which 10% comes from plastic. He pointed out that the country faces two types of problems in plastic recycling. One is household source classification, and the other is littering. In household source classification, plastic is mixed with other waste, making it difficult to classify. If the source classification is handled properly, the collection amount of plastic waste will increase.

June 5th is World Environment Day. According to the official website of the United Nations, this year's World Environment Day focuses on "Plastic pollution solutions". The United Nations calls on governments, companies and other stakeholders to speed up action to solve the Plastic pollution crisis.
