The Thai Cabinet decided to ban the import of plastic waste from 2025

According to Thai public television, the Thai Cabinet decided on February 21 to ban the import of all plastic waste from January 1, 2025. In addition, the import of plastic waste this year and next year will be controlled. The amount of waste imported by the 14 recycling stations located in the tax-free zone this year should not exceed their total capacity of 372994 tons. In 2024, the amount of plastic waste imported by these factories must be reduced to half of their capacity.

If processing plastic waste is imported outside the duty-free zone, the importer must prove that the import is necessary due to the shortage of supply. Imported plastic waste must be used as raw materials in the production process without cleaning.

Tipanan Sirichana, deputy spokesman of the Thai government, said that strict regulations and eventual ban on the import of plastic waste are a government policy aimed at protecting the environment, controlling pollution and protecting national health.
