Reduce by 10% by 2030, 15% by 2035, and 20% by 2040
On November 22nd, the European Parliament voted to pass a specific goal of reducing the total amount of plastic packaging in the European Union.
According to this goal, the EU will reduce the total amount of plastic packaging by 10% by 2030, 15% by 2035, and 20% by 2040. The proposed goal is higher than the overall packaging reduction target previously proposed by the European Commission in its Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulations: a 5% reduction by 2030, a 10% reduction by 2035, and a 15% reduction by 2040.
The European Parliament has stated that the EU also hopes to ban the sale of ultra-thin plastic bags with a thickness of less than 15 microns, unless necessary for hygiene reasons or as bulk food packaging to prevent food waste. The European Parliament also recommends strict restrictions on the use of certain forms of disposable packaging, such as micro packaging for hotel toiletries and shrink packaging for airport luggage.
The European Parliament also proposed to ban the use of perfluorinated and perfluoroalkyl substances (PFAs) and bisphenol A in food contact packaging. Frederick Reese, a member of the European Parliament, said, "The recent incidents of PFAs chemical water pollution in Europe, especially in Belgium, indicate that Europe urgently needs to take action."
