Geneva November 8, 2022/AP/-- After six years of preparation, the Plastic Odyssey and its crew left Marseilles Port on October 1 to begin a three-year round the world trip. Their goal is to take action from the source, that is, on land, to combat plastic pollution.
The Plastic Odyssey ship wears the colors of L'OCCITANE en Provence, its main partner, on its bow.
30 stops on three continents for 3 weeks
Plastic Odyssey is an experimental ship refitted from an ocean survey ship to combat plastic pollution. It will stop at 30 stations on 3 continents (Mediterranean and Africa, South America and Southeast Asia) for 3 weeks within 3 years.
Each docking station will provide an opportunity to raise local people's awareness of the fight against plastic pollution, and train future environmentalists with low technology methods that are easy to use and highly efficient. Its goal is to promote the development of an economic model based on waste recycling, which is developed by local entrepreneurs to prevent waste from eventually flowing into the sea. At present, 20 tons of plastic are dumped into the ocean every minute, so this is an urgent need.
Clean up the past and build the future
The "Plastic Odyssey" project has two pillars. The first focuses on solving problems left over by history, and the second focuses on future development.
"Cleaning up the past" means turning billions of tons of plastic into resources.
"Building the Future" brings together the practical actions of the team to promote the understanding and development of plastic use methods.
